With a B.A. in Law from the University of Gent, Eric Derycke is a Professor of Law and Former Minister of Foreign Affairs of Belgium.

His political career began in 1984. He has since served terms as Minister of Science Policy (1991), Minister of international cooperation and development (1991-1995), Minister of Foreign Affairs (1995-1999).

In 1999, he was a Member of the Foreign Committee and Member Committee of Justice, Chamber of Represenatatives. In the same year, he was appointed Head of the Belgian Delegation to the Council of Europe, and was a Member of both the Political Committee and Committee on Justice. He was also Head of the Belgian Delegation to I.P.U.

Together with the Canadian Foreign Minister, he is the co-author of an anti-mining treaty ratified in Ottawa, in 1999.

He received the Benelux-EU prize from the University of Breda, The Netherlands, in 1999.
