Born in Kozani, Greece in 1959, Ms. Diamantopoulou graduated from the School of Civil Engineering of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (1976-1981) and did Postgraduate Studies in Regional Development at the Panteion University of Athens (1991-1993).

She worked as a civil engineer between 1981-1985, and later as a lecturer at the Institutes of Higher Technological Education (1983-1985). From 1989-1993, she was Managing Director of regional development company

Her political career began when she was elected Prefect of Kastoria in 1985-1986. She subsequently served as Secretary General for Adult Education (1987-1988), Secretary General for Youth (1988-1989), Member of the Central Committee of PASOK (1991-1999), President of the Hellenic Organisation of Small and Medium-Sized Enterprises and Handicrafts (EOMMEX) (1993-1994), and Secretary General for Industry (1994-1996). Between 1996-1999, she was both Member of Parliament for Kozani and Deputy Minister for Development. Ms. Diamantopoulou is currently EU Commissioner for Employment and Social Affairs.

A member of both the FORUM for the co-operation of Balkan peoples and the International Women's Network, Ms. Diamantopoulou is married with one child.
