John Panaretos is a Professor of Probability and Statistics (since 1991) in the Department of Statistics of the Athens University of Economics and Business. He is currently on sabbatical leave visiting the University of California, Berkeley and Stanford University. At UC Berkeley, he has contacts with the Department of Statistics, the Survey Research Center and the Center for Studies in Higher Education. His Stanford links are with the Department of Statistics and the Center of Deliberative Democracy of the Department of Communication.

He is Director of the Institute of Statistical Documentation Research and Analysis (since 1996), member of the Scientific Council of the Greek Parliament (since 1987), and member of the governing board of Institute of Strategic and Development Studies, (ISTAME) – Andreas Papandreou (since 2004).

John Panaretos has served as General Secretary of the Ministry of Education, under George Papandreou as Minister (1988 – 1989 & 1995 – 1996), Chairman of the National Educational Council of Greece (1996 – 2000), Vice President of the European Network of National Councils of Education (1997 – 2000) and Chairman of the Council of Higher Education (1998 – 1999).

Mr. Panaretos was born in Kythera, Greece.
