Sergey Stanishev is the Prime Minister of Bulgaria. He is head of the Bulgarian Socialist Party and came into power in August 2005, leading a three-party coalition. He was elected Party Chairman in December 2001. Prior to that, Mr. Stanishev was an elected member of the national assembly. Between 1996-2001 he was director of Foreign Policy and International Relations department of the Socialist Party’s Supreme Council. A former journalist, he is author of more than 50 publications on foreign policy issues in Bulgarian and foreign periodicals.

Born in Kherson, Ukraine, he was educated at Moscow State University where he earned a doctorate in History (1994) and was a Visiting Fellow in International Relations at the London School of Economics in 1998.
