"Europe in the Global Community: Leader or Follower? A Progressive's Approach to the Challenges of the 21st Century"

Skafidia - Olympia, Greece

“Europe in the Global Community: Leader or Follower?” was the theme of the 4th annual Symi Symposium that took place in Olympia, July 7-15, 2001. Taking a progressive approach to the challenges of the 21st century, participants addressed issues like: employment and social protection; prospects and challenges for the global economy; alternative governance models to tackle world problems; democratic governance in a globalized world; and a new, more active role for Europe.

Organised by the Andreas G. Papandreou Foundation, the Symi Symposium brings together progressive politicians, academics, activists, and entrepreneurs to exchange views on some of the most important issues on the global agenda.

Convened every year on a different Greek island, the Symi Symposium is designed to nurture spirited debate in a discreet setting. Participants come from all over the world, and their divergent interests and backgrounds enliven both formal and informal conversations. The Symi Symposium has fostered ideas and friendships that have borne fruit in the form of significant projects, ventures, and public service.
